Concrete for a City That More Than Doubled

Wildwood grew faster than almost any town in the region, and concrete contractors here pour for two very different housing stocks. The city had 6,709 residents in 2010 and 15,730 in 2020, a 134.5 percent jump in one decade. Housing units went from 2,062 in 2000 to 10,125 in 2020. Older blocks near Main Street and the old rail yard sit a few miles from new subdivisions off State Road 44 and County Road 466A. We pour driveways and city-spec aprons, patios, sidewalks, garage and equipment slabs, and we repair concrete that has broken or settled.

Wildwood's driveway apron standard

The City of Wildwood publishes a residential driveway permit application, and its numbers are specific. The part of the driveway from the roadway to the property line must be poured at least 6 inches thick. The apron must be at least 10 feet wide, with a 3-foot flare where it meets the road. Plans that do not show the thickness, width and flare get denied. The application goes to Development Services at 100 N. Main Street, signed by the owner or with the owner's written authorization.

The city is just as clear about timing: no concrete may be poured until City Public Works inspects and approves the forms. If it is poured early and does not meet the standard, the applicant is responsible for tearing it out and replacing it. We schedule that inspection before we order concrete, every time.

When an old apron has to be upgraded

Under the city's land development rules, existing aprons have to be brought up to standard when a new home or other structure is built, or when a mobile home is placed or replaced. If you are adding a garage, replacing a manufactured home or building on an infill lot in the older part of town, plan on a new apron. We price and permit it as part of the driveway, so it is not a surprise later.

A railroad town with highway traffic

Wildwood was a division point and rail yard for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, and passenger trains were split there for St. Petersburg and Miami until the 1990s. The yard is now used by CSX. Today the city sits at the junction of I-75, Florida's Turnpike, State Road 44 and US 301, which is why it calls itself the Crossroads of Florida. For homeowners, that means a mix of older homes on grid streets, rural lots on the edges and new construction filling in between. Each one needs a slightly different approach to base, thickness and drainage.

What we pour in Wildwood

  • Driveways and aprons: new drives, replacements and aprons that meet the 6-inch, 10-foot, 3-foot-flare standard
  • Patios: backyard slabs, covered patio floors and lanai extensions
  • Decorative work: stamped and colored concrete for patios and walks
  • Sidewalks: front walks, side paths and steps at the entry
  • Slabs: shed, carport, workshop and equipment pads
  • Repair: broken panels, sunken sections near the garage and trip hazards

Planning for heat and rain

Wildwood is low and fairly flat, at about 85 feet above sea level, so water does not always have a natural place to go. We set the slope of every patio and driveway before the pour, keep runoff moving toward the yard or street, and use control joints sized for Florida heat. Call (352) 706-8874 to book a visit.

Wildwood Questions

How thick does a driveway apron have to be in Wildwood?

The city's residential driveway application says the section from the roadway to the property line must be at least 6 inches thick, at least 10 feet wide, with a 3-foot flare at the road.

Can you pour before the city inspects?

No. The city says no concrete may be poured without Public Works inspection and approval. If it is poured early and fails, the applicant has to remove and replace it, so we always wait for the inspection.

Do I need a new apron if I replace my mobile home?

The city's rules require existing aprons to be upgraded when a new home or structure is built or a mobile home is placed or replaced. We include the apron in the plan when that applies.
