Concrete for Lake Country in Western Sumter County

Lake Panasoffkee is a census-designated place in Sumter County, and concrete contractors working here are building for life near water. Of the community's 6.60 square miles, 2.30 are water, and the Lake Panasoffkee park and preserve next door covers 9,911 acres, with another 1,118 acres in the Panasoffkee Outlet preserve. The 2020 census counted 4,072 residents and 2,458 housing units. We pour driveways, patios, walks, boat and RV pads, and slabs for sheds and carports, and we repair concrete that has cracked, sunk or washed out.

Seasonal homes and practical slabs

One number stands out in the 2020 census: 25.7 percent of Lake Panasoffkee's housing units were vacant at the time of the count. In a lake town, that usually reflects seasonal and part-time homes. For concrete, it means many owners want work that holds up while they are away: pads that keep a boat or RV level, driveways that do not rut, and patios that drain on their own. We plan for low maintenance, with a broom finish that stays safe when wet and joints that control cracking.

Water levels and ground near the lake

The community sits about 52 feet above sea level. Wikipedia notes that the Wysong Dam on the Withlacoochee River was built in 1962, and that water levels dropped in 1981 to lows not seen since then, which shows how much lake levels can swing. Lots near the shore and in low spots can have wet ground in the rainy season and dry, loose sand in drought. Both are hard on a slab with a weak base. We dig out soft material, compact the base, and keep the slab's edges protected from runoff.

On waterfront lots, we also think about where runoff goes. Grading a patio or driveway to drain toward the lawn instead of straight to the shoreline is better for the slab and for the lake.

History on the lakeshore

Black Seminoles settled near Boggy Island around 1813 at a place called Sitarkey's Village. In 1908 Cleveland entrepreneur Charles G. King developed 737 acres into Monarch Grove, and the citrus industry here, like elsewhere in Central Florida, suffered damaging freezes in the 1880s and 1890s. Today the lake is the draw. The park is reached from the south side of State Road 44, two miles west of Interstate 75.

Permits in an unincorporated community

Lake Panasoffkee has no city government, so permits come from Sumter County. The county says a driveway permit is required for residential driveway work, and that residential driveway permits are free. For patios, pads and slabs, we confirm with the county what your project needs before we schedule.

Lake Panasoffkee Questions

Can you pour a boat pad near the lake?

Yes. We size the pad for the trailer, compact the base well and grade it to drain toward the lawn rather than straight to the shoreline.

Who handles permits in Lake Panasoffkee?

Sumter County. The county requires a driveway permit for residential driveway work, at no charge for residential permits, and we check what your patio or slab needs.

My slab edge is washing out. What causes that?

Usually runoff running along the edge and carrying sand away. We fix the drainage first, then replace or support the undermined section.
