Summerfield Concrete, North of The Villages
Summerfield is where Marion County meets the northern edge of The Villages, and concrete contractors working here handle both small-acreage homes and newer neighborhoods. It is an unincorporated community near the intersection of US 301 and County Road 475A, and it is part of the Ocala metropolitan area. We pour driveways, patios and screen room floors, walks, and slabs for sheds, barns and workshops, and we repair concrete that has cracked, settled or broken.
A community with a long name history
Wikipedia traces Summerfield back to Col. Adam G. Summer, who moved from South Carolina in 1856 and settled about 1,400 acres known as Watula, or Long Hammock. After the Civil War, Charles H. White opened the first general store, and the community was renamed Whitesville in 1873. When a landowner refused the railroad a right-of-way in 1880, the railroad built a station two miles east; a new station was built in Whitesville in 1887. In 1888 the town took the name Summerfield, and a post office by that name has operated since 1885.
That farm-and-rail history still shows in the property mix. Some homes sit on acreage with outbuildings and long drives, others on smaller lots near the highway. The concrete needs are just as varied.
Marion County permits
Summerfield has no city government, so permits run through Marion County. The county's Building Safety office uses its Civic Access system for building, development review, driveway, right-of-way and zoning permits. Whether your patio, slab or driveway needs a permit depends on what you are building and where it connects to the road. We check the county's requirements for your address and pull what is needed before work starts.
If your home is in a part of The Villages that falls in Marion County, ARC approval from your district may also be required for driveway changes, coatings and patios, on top of any county permit.
Ground and water in southern Marion County
Much of the ground in this part of Marion County is sandy, and summer is the rainy season. Sand drains well, but it also washes out from under slab edges when roof water or a sprinkler runs against it for years. Before a pour we compact the base in lifts, check where downspouts and irrigation hit the ground, and set the grade so water leaves the slab. On a driveway that carries a truck or a horse trailer, we increase thickness and reinforcement in the areas that take the load.

Planning the job
On a first visit we measure the area, look at drainage and access for the concrete truck, and talk through finish options. For larger rural slabs, truck access across a yard can be the deciding factor in the schedule, especially after heavy rain. We plan around it so the pour happens on firm ground.
