Center Hill Concrete in Old Farm Country

Center Hill is a small city in eastern Sumter County with a long history, and concrete contractors working here pour mostly for homes on larger lots and working farms. It was settled as Abraham's Old Town by 1800 and as Peliklakaha in 1813, and it incorporated as the City of Center Hill in 1925. The city had 988 residents in 2010 and 846 in 2020. We pour driveways, patios, walks, and slabs for barns, shops and equipment, and we repair concrete that has broken or sunk.

A place in Florida history

Wikipedia says U.S. forces under General Abraham Eustis burned Peliklakaha in 1836. On April 19, 1842, Colonel William J. Worth attacked Halleck Tustenuggee there, and on August 14, 1842, Worth declared the Second Seminole War over. Later, the area became farm country: green bean production was notable early in the 20th century, though it had nearly disappeared by 1975. That farming past is still visible in the outbuildings, packing sheds and long lanes on many properties.

Ground near swamp and river

Center Hill sits about 89 feet above sea level, with Wahoo Swamp, Jumper Lake and the Withlacoochee River nearby, and the Jumper Creek drainage flows toward the river. Lots close to that drainage can stay wet in the rainy season. Before we pour, we check how the ground drains, remove soft or organic soil, and build up and compact a proper base. A slab placed on soft ground will crack no matter how well it is finished, so the prep is where we spend our time.

The kind of work we do here

In a farm town of a few hundred households, the requests are practical. Owners want a solid shop floor, a pad for a tank or generator, a driveway apron that does not break apart where it meets the road, or a patio to replace a worn deck. Older homes often need steps and walks replaced. We match the slab to the job: thicker where trucks and equipment roll, lighter where only people walk.

The 2020 census counted 322 households and 212 families. Many homes are family places held for decades, so we plan concrete that will last as long as the house.

Permits

Work inside Center Hill city limits goes through the city, and unincorporated land around it falls under Sumter County, which requires a driveway permit for residential driveway work and does not charge for residential driveway permits. We confirm which office applies before we start.
