Astatula Concrete Along Monroe Street
Astatula is a small town in central Lake County, and concrete contractors here pour for homes on both lake lots and country roads. It sits on the east side of Little Lake Harris, and its name is the Seminole name for Lake Harris. The town was settled in 1872 and incorporated on May 4, 1927. The 2020 census counted 1,889 residents and 781 housing units. We pour driveways, patios, walks and slabs, and we repair concrete that has cracked or settled.
One main road, many connections
County Road 561, called Monroe Street in town, is Astatula's main road. It runs about 8 miles north to Tavares, the county seat, and about 7 miles south to US 27 near Minneola. Many Astatula homes have driveways onto county roads, and Lake County's residential driveway permit form sets the rules for those connections.
The form says a permit is required to build a new driveway or modify an existing one in the county right-of-way. For a concrete apron on a paved road, it lists 6-inch reinforced concrete at 3,000 PSI with 6-by-6 wire mesh. The driveway must be between 10 and 24 feet wide at the property line, with an 8-foot radius or 8-by-4-foot flares at the road, and the apron slope cannot exceed 14 percent. Aprons must sit 100 feet from the nearest intersecting road and 10 feet from the nearest property corner. We design to those numbers from the start.
Culverts and sod
Where drainage runs along the road, the county may require a culvert under the driveway. It has to match the diameter of existing neighborhood culverts, or, if there are none, be at least 15 inches in diameter and 30 feet long. All disturbed areas must be sodded to match the existing grass, and the owner keeps the sod watered until it takes. We include those details in the plan, so the job is not held up at inspection.
Life on Little Lake Harris
Astatula's water area is small, only about 1 percent of its 3.16 square miles, but Little Lake Harris is right at the edge of town and a boat ramp sits on its east side. The town is about 89 feet above sea level. Homes near the lake often want a patio or screen room slab facing the water and a wider driveway for a boat trailer. Homes farther out want shop slabs, carport pads and aprons that hold up to trucks.
The 2020 census shows a homeowner vacancy rate of just 2.8 percent, so most homes are lived in year-round and most of our work is improvement and replacement.
