Concrete for the Hills of Howey
Howey-in-the-Hills is one of the few places in Central Florida where concrete contractors have to think seriously about slope. The town's rolling ground earned it the nickname "The Florida Alps," and Wikipedia notes that Sugarloaf Mountain, at 312 feet, is in the same region, among the highest elevations in Central Florida. The town itself sits on the west shore of Little Lake Harris at about 89 feet. We pour driveways, patios, walks, steps and slabs here, and we repair concrete that has cracked or shifted.
A town built by a citrus developer
William John Howey, a citrus grower and real estate developer, began platting land near Lake Harris for housing in 1921, and Wikipedia credits him with building the first citrus juice plant in Florida that year. The town incorporated as the Town of Howey on May 8, 1925, and became Howey-in-the-Hills in 1927. The Howey Mansion, William Howey's original home, still stands. Some homes date from those early decades; many more are recent. The town grew from 1,098 residents in 2010 to 1,643 in 2020, up 49.6 percent.
Slope changes everything
On a flat lot, a driveway is mainly about base and thickness. On a sloped lot, it is also about traction, water speed and transitions. A steep driveway sheds rain fast, and that water can scour the edges and the yard below. We plan the slope, add a textured finish where traction matters, and give water a controlled path off the slab. Where a drive or walk changes grade sharply, steps or a landing can be safer than a ramp.
Patios on sloped lots usually need one side built up. That fill has to be compacted in layers, or the downhill edge will settle and crack. We form a thickened edge on the low side and, where needed, build a short retaining edge to hold the fill.
