Ocklawaha Concrete on the Lake Weir Shore
Ocklawaha sits on the north shore of Lake Weir in southeastern Marion County, and concrete contractors working here spend most of their time on lake homes. About 1 of the community's 3.39 square miles is water, mostly Lake Weir to the south, with Bowers Lake on the western edge. Ocala and Leesburg are each about 18 miles away. The community took its name from the nearby Ocklawaha River, and a post office opened here in 1884. We pour driveways, patios, walks, boat pads and slabs, and we repair concrete that has cracked or washed out.
Many homes, not all lived in year-round
The 2020 census counted 838 housing units and 1,508 residents, and 22.7 percent of those units were vacant at the time of the count. On a lake, that usually means a lot of part-time and seasonal homes. Owners who are away for months want concrete that takes care of itself: a patio that drains on its own, a boat or trailer pad that stays level, and a driveway that does not rut or break at the edges while no one is there.
The lake and the ground
Lake Weir covers 5,685 acres, with 38 miles of shoreline and a surface at about 52 feet. The community sits slightly higher, at about 69 feet. Lake lots have groundwater nearer the surface, and runoff from roofs and drives naturally heads to the water. We grade slabs so water spreads across the lawn instead of rushing toward the shore, compact the base, and protect slab edges where runoff could carry sand away. Near the water, a broom or textured finish helps with footing when surfaces are wet.
A piece of 1930s history
Ocklawaha is known for one dramatic day in 1935, when federal agents surrounded a house here and the shootout that followed ended with the deaths of Fred Barker and his mother, Kate "Ma" Barker. Wikipedia says agents fired about 500 bullets and roughly 250 shots were returned. The lakefront has been a getaway for far longer than that, and homes here range from older cottages to newer houses.
Permits
Ocklawaha is unincorporated, so permits come from Marion County. The county's Building Safety office handles building, driveway and right-of-way permits through its Civic Access system. We check what your project needs before we schedule.
